I'm Andrea Dana, executive director of the Iowa State Dance and Drill Team Association.
At this year's state championships, more than 5,000 of Iowa's top young dancers performed nearly 600 routines, making this one of the nation's largest and most prestigious events of its kind.
-Five, six, seven, eight.
-The long hours of practice count down to the final preparations as dance teams bring their best to the performance floor.
I'm Lois Turnage, board president of the ISDTA.
We had an astounding 247 high school and 22 college teams competing in this year's championships event.
-I'm event announcer Scott Enyart.
The performances were judged by leaders in the dance industry from across the country.
Here now are highlights of all the winning routines and the busy backstage action in this exclusive presentation of the 2022 Iowa State Dance Team Championships.
We open with the champions in Class I Pom.
Bishop Garrigan.
Second place was Boyer Valley.
Springville placed third.
Kingsley-Pierson came in fourth, and in fifth place was West Bend-Mallard.
-Bishop Garrigan's bringing great energy to the floor with this state championship routine in Class I Pom.
Lots of variety.
Good showcasing, great evidence of strength and training.
Nicely done.
-This year marks our 46th state championship, which included three days of competition.
You could really feel the energy and excitement as we return to fully in-person.
♪♪ What awesome, sharp, clean pom movements Bishop Garrigan has here.
♪♪ -Movement across the floor and formation changes add to the visual.
They're doing a great job with that, as well.
♪♪ -Nice, smooth transition and nice arm angles.
♪♪ -Great job, Bishop Garrigan.
-Placing first in Class II Pom was St. Albert.
Lone Tree placed second, and third place was Wapello.
Fourth place with Southeast Warren, and in fifth place was Baxter.
-I thought St. Albert did a really nice job of covering the floor with six dancers.
Really good turns there in a spotlight.
They have a variety of movements and transitions.
St. Albert's doing a great job of covering the floor nicely, making the team look larger.
-♪ Girls, girls run the world ♪ ♪ Girls, girls run the world ♪ -Cute mix of music, as well.
Lots of fun.

-♪ Like the ceiling can't hold us ♪ -Great job, St. Albert Lisbon earned first place in Class III Pom.
North-Linn came in second.
Newman Catholic placed third.
Fourth place was Akron-Westfield, and in fifth place, MMCRU of Marcus.
-Our judging panel is using a score sheet based on 100 possible points.
Categories that they are looking for include choreography, execution, difficulty of technique, general effect, and showmanship.
-Lisbon's doing a really nice job of musicality, using their moves to match the music, accent the music.
Makes it fun to watch.
♪♪ Over the three days of competition, we had 155 pom routines, which equated to 13 different classes, and it's just a fun stat.
That's 26% of the overall team routines.
-Wow.
It's certainly a popular category.
♪♪ ♪♪ -Earning first place in Class IV Pom was West Fork.
AGWSR placed second.
In third was Pleasantville.
Colfax-Mingo came in fourth, and in fifth place was Alburnett.
♪♪ -Nice use of the floor.
They're changing up the formation visually.
-And in those transitions, I'd like to note they're making it look really easy.
They've had to practice that a lot because they're nailing every one of those transitions and they're moving all the time.
-And I also like the arm movements that help fill those transitions, as well.
-That's dancing through your transitions.
♪♪ Great toe touches by the full team.
♪♪ -Great job, West Fork.

PCM placed second.
In third place was Union.
Tipton placed fourth, and North Fayette Valley came in fifth.
♪♪ -The Hip Hop category is among one of the most popular for our high school teams.
They have a lot of fun out there, as you can see Kuemper Catholic doing right here.
♪♪ -Combination of the music, costuming, the skills that you can incorporate with your team.
It's a total package, and they have a lot of fun.
-♪ And you know we don't, we don't, it's not your birthday ♪ ♪ When I pull out up front, you see the Benz on dubs ♪ ♪ When I roll 20 deep ♪ ♪ There's always drama in the club ♪ ♪ Hear I'm up with Dre, everybody show me love ♪ ♪ When you sell like Eminem, you get plenty of groupie love ♪ ♪ If you watch how I move, you'll mistake me ♪ ♪ For a playa or pimp ♪ ♪ Been hit wit' a few shells, but I don't walk wit' a limp ♪ ♪ Now shorty said she feeling my style, she feeling my flow ♪ ♪ Now shorty said she feeling my style, she feeling my flow ♪ [ Song changes ] -I love the variety of music that they select, but also the tempo changes keeps your interest.

♪ ♪ The clock is ticking, running out of time ♪ -Clear Lake won Class VI Hip Hop.
Davenport Assumption came in second.
In third was New Hampton.
Vinton-Shellsburg placed fourth, and Sioux Center came in fifth.
♪♪ -What a powerful opening here by Clear Lake.
Strong dancers showing their athleticism and how much strength it really takes to pull off a hip hop routine.
♪♪ -All the levels that they have make it very visual throughout this routine.
-Nice.
♪♪ -Those head springs there are not easy.
-No, and the timing to be able to do it all at once, very impressive.
♪♪ Nice little peel off there.
Good visual effect.
-Great energy and personality from Clear Lake here.
♪♪ ♪♪ -A lot of energy and stamina throughout this routine.
♪♪ In Class VII Hip Hop, Xavier was crowned the champion.
Grinnell placed second.
In third was Bondurant-Farrar.
Keokuk came in fourth, and then fifth place was Harlan.
♪♪ -I absolutely love the clean and strong look of this team and the full team doing head springs.
Holy smokes, that's awesome.
They are so strong out there.

-I'm here with the Xavier dance team and Coach Jess Novotny coming off of a tremendous season here at State 2022.
Xavier Dance has a long tradition of excellence at state competition.
This year is no exception.
Two outstanding team routines, six fabulous soloists, and they are the recipients of the Team Character Counts Award for 2022 for their outstanding community service.
How are your service projects important to your community?
-I'm Emmy and I'm a sophomore.
Xavier has a long tradition of helping others in our community.
So as you know, our community was impacted by the derecho this past two years, and even though it was a while ago, we're still cleaning up and trying to make our community whole again.
So we've really stepped in in trying to help everyone in our community, and we've been more than willing to help whenever they need it.
I'm Berkeley, and I'm a senior on the team, and we're definitely a super tight-knit team and we're always there for each other's needs, and I feel like that also translates into our community.
It definitely helps to have such an amazing team with me.
I think we all inspire each other and they make me want to work as hard as I possibly can, especially our coach.
She pushes us beyond what we ever thought we could have done, and I think every year, that's why we continue to get better, is because we work so hard and we push ourselves every single year to be better.
-While these girls may not always be dancers, they will take all of these lessons that they learned through my program, through ISDTA's program, just those values and that life of service.
And I hope that as they get older, you know, they can look back at these memories and feel that fulfillment and hopefully model that continually so it's just that ripple effect that we have felt from ISDTA, and I'm hoping to pass on to them.
My fifth season coaching, and it's just more good to come.

-Now we're back to the action with Western Dubuque, the champions in Class VIII Hip Hop.
Mason City placed second.
Fort Dodge came in third.
Fourth place was Urbandale, and in fifth place was Waverly-Shell Rock.
-I really like how Western Dubuque took a risk in their music choice.
This is not your typical hip hop music that you would expect to hear.
It's very interpretive, and they are doing an excellent job by hitting those accents in the music and just telling that story.
-Those hip hop elements of choreography and skills are certainly in the content of the performance, but yes, the costuming, the music choice, it just takes it to a different level.
Very innovative.
-♪ 'Cause I know how it hurts ♪ ♪ When you lose the one you wanted ♪ ♪ 'Cause he's taken you for granted ♪ -Nice aerials by those girls.
-Indeed.
-♪ It's a little too late for you to come back ♪ ♪ Say it's just a mistake ♪ ♪ Think I'd forgive you like that ♪ ♪ If you thought I would wait for you ♪ ♪ You thought wrong ♪ -And after this routine, we knew who Sioux City East was, the champions in Class IX Hip Hop.
Second place was Southeast Polk.
Waterloo West placed third.
Fourth place was Johnston, and Cedar Falls came in fifth.
-That beginning, if that doesn't get you charged -- Whoo!
[ Laughs ] That is phenomenal!
I just get so excited.
They're hard hitting, it's impressive, and I love the letter jackets.
It's so fun and classy.
-So much pride.
So much representation of Sioux City East High School.
I love this mix of music.
Their faces, their energy.
I cannot say enough about this dance.

Second place was Storm Lake St. Mary's.
Alta-Aurelia came in third.
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn placed fourth.
We had a tie for fifth between MFL MarMac and Grundy Center.
♪♪ -♪ Let's go to the hop ♪ ♪ Hey, hey ♪ -Hoopla is a really fun category.
Teams seem to really enjoy it, and they can get really creative, as you can see with different colors and different sizes of hoops and themes.
You don't have to have a theme, but here, just adorable.
They costumed it, and it's just very well done.
♪♪ -The black and white and the pink just make for a nice, clean look out on the floor, and the executions throughout this performance is impeccable.
-Yes, that toss right there, very clever.
♪♪ -And they choreographed to the theme of the music really well.
♪♪ ♪♪ Sioux City North placed first in Class II Hoopla.
Storm Lake placed second, and Sioux City West came in third.
♪♪ -Great colors on the floor.
Wonderful visuals, good formation changes adding to that visual interest.
Nicely done with the turn.
Lots of great elements going on here.
-You can feel their energy coming off the floor.
They did a really nice job.
♪♪ -Nice there.
-♪ I'll be there ♪ ♪ I'll be there for you ♪ ♪ I'll be there ♪ ♪ I'll be there for you ♪ ♪♪ -And this is the visual we always look forward to in Hoopla, this nice straight line contagion.
♪♪ -Very well done by Sioux City North.
-Sharp and clean.

-There's "snow" doubt about it.
Wapello crowned the champions in Class I Novelty.
Second place was North Mahaska.
Third place, Springville.
Baxter came in fourth, and Bellevue placed fifth.
Was it that it's a cool routine?
-Very cool.
In our novelty category, routines are to tell a story, and here we're getting to have a snow day with the Wapello dancers.
-The cute little cabin in the back is adorable.
-I kind of want to go out there and dance with them.
-I know, it kind of looks pretty fun.

Third was Estherville Lincoln Central.
North Union placed fourth, and Union placed fifth.
Pleasantville also earned a Judges' Choice Award for this routine.
-The Judges' Choice Awards are given twice each day to the memorable and outstanding routines that take the floor at state competition.
-♪ Like butter ♪ -This is such a fun bakeshop theme coming from Pleasantville for their Novelty routine.
Wonderful props, lots of energy, great fun, and the music mixes are off the charts.
Nicely done.
-♪ Like butter, like butter ♪ ♪ Like butter, like butter ♪ ♪ Like butter ♪ -Great facial expressions by the dancers.
♪♪ -♪ When a problem comes along, you must whip it ♪ -They thought of everything.
-Whip up those eggs, you bet.
-And they do a nice job of including a lot of really nice dance elements while telling their story.
-You're gonna have to add some flour.
♪ Flour ♪ -Gentlemen, start your engines.
And may the best woman win.
-And win they did.
This is Waverly-Shell Rock, the champions in Class III Novelty, with this race-themed routine.
-♪ We like the cars, the cars that go vroom ♪ -Second place was Pella.
Third place, Sioux City East, and Mason City came in fourth.
♪♪ I love how Waverly-Shell Rock is carrying out their theme with some really creative music, but they are so sharp and clean and hitting all the choreography, which just takes it to that next level.
♪♪ -They did a nice job of carrying out that race theme with the checkered flag on their uniforms, as well as in the backdrops.
[ Engine revving ] -And the music and the sound effects are so dynamic and add to the interest, as well.
♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ -New Hampton executed this basketball-themed routine to earn first place in Class I Prop.
Second place was Clayton Ridge, and Central Lee came in third.
New Hampton also earned a Judges' Choice Award for this performance.
This is so well executed.
-New Hampton's use of the basketballs incorporates the prop criteria that is important in this category.
Very well done.
-These dancers clearly have some skills.
-Everything's right on beat.
I love it.
♪♪ ♪♪ -They might get recruited by the basketball coach.
Maybe some of them are on the basketball team.
-I will guess and say yeah.
♪♪ -Way to show off your skills, New Hampton.
-Nice.
♪♪ -Denison-Schleswig won the battle in Class II Prop, earning their championship with this pirate-themed performance.
LeMars placed second, and North Polk came in third.
♪♪ -I really enjoy the pirate theme.
They have swords, they have planks, and they really incorporate a lot of dance elements, which is wonderful, but the focus still is on the props, which is the emphasis needed in this category.
-It's a very musical routine, as well.
They're using the varying styles in the score of the music to tell their story.
♪♪ -And their strong moves emphasize the use of their swords and the props, and then, of course, walking the plank.
♪♪ -Their costuming is fabulous, too.
♪♪ ♪♪ -Next, we'll look at our Lights category placements.
The Lights category requires a darkened venue, making it difficult to capture for television.
East Sac County placed first in Class I Lights.
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn placed second, and Audubon placed third.
Creston was crowned the champion in Class II Lights, with Unity Christian placing second and Western Christian placing third.
♪♪ Sergeant Bluff-Luton was full of joy when they won Class I Show Production.
Second place was East Sac County, and BGM came in third.
Sergeant Bluff-Luton also earned a Judges' Choice Award for their interpretation of the animated film "Inside Out."
-I'm sadness.
[ Baby cooing ] -In our Show Production category, teams are to carry out a theme, and their routines can be three to five minutes in length, so these are longer than the normal routines, and they can incorporate a variety of dance styles.
And Sergeant Bluff-Luton is doing a great job of doing an interpretation of this movie.
-And they are so animated with their emotions throughout this routine.
-Beautiful storytelling.
Backdrops add to the colorful message of this routine.
Beautifully done.
-♪ 'Cause everybody hurts ♪ ♪ Sometimes ♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ Sioux City East earned the Championship in Class II Show production.
-♪ Where are you, Christmas?
♪ ♪ Why can't I find you?
♪ -This routine put me in the Christmas spirit in early December.
Their costuming and makeup and dancing and carrying out this theme of Grinch just was so well done.
-The floor is truly transformed into a stage, and so many dancers we'll see come from these backdrops.
It's just very, very well done.
-I feel like I'm in Whoville.
-Yes.
♪♪ ♪♪ -There's presents and reindeer and Santas.
♪♪ And here come all the characters.
♪♪ -The boys from Davenport Central earned first place in the All-Male category.
Second place was Cedar Falls.
-Certainly a fan favorite to watch, and the boys from Davenport Central are bringing it there on the floor, having fun.
-They do a nice job of including a lot of hip hop elements in their routine.
-♪ 'Cause that's enough to make the angels in heaven celebrate ♪ ♪ And now a party over one shorty that truly escape ♪ ♪ The Wrath of Father 'cause Abba has now given them grace ♪ ♪ There is joy in the heavens when a sinner repents ♪ ♪ Way over 99 who's already convinced ♪ ♪ So when you see us and you thinking we ain't got no sense ♪ -Davenport Central's got it going on.
-♪ See, we're ignited like a volcano blast ♪ [ Song changes ] -Nice.
-Well, that was impressive.
Very entertaining routine here by Davenport Central.

And here we see the Class I champions, Oskaloosa.
Second place was Grinnell, and third place was Creston.
-♪ Got lost in the game ♪ ♪ Oh, baby, baby ♪ -This is so fun, taking it back old school.
They are utilizing the costuming, the music, the choreography, reminiscent of the '90s, and we're just loving it.
-I love that you just said the '90s is old school, and I'm feeling aged right now.
[ Laughter ] -♪ And no matter what I do ♪ ♪ I feel the pain ♪ ♪ With or without you ♪ -Can't touch this.

-In the Co-ed routines, they need to focus on partner dancing, and what impressive lifts here.
This is a great example of the partner dancing.
They do a good job.
♪♪ -And the energy and the dynamics between the two partners is so apparent.
-The champions in Class II Co-ed, Davenport Central.
♪♪ -Davenport Central is bringing an "Aladdin" theme to the floor here for State 2022.
And this is exciting because for this particular team as well as others, last year they had a virtual submission due to COVID restrictions from their various districts.
To be back on the floor in person is huge.
-♪ You got me bona fide and certified ♪ ♪ You got a genie ♪ -It certainly appears that they're having a lot of fun out there.
-♪ So what you wish, I really wanna know ♪ ♪ You got a list that's three miles long ♪ -They definitely have a lot of kids out there dancing, which I'm guessing finding practice times that coordinated between academics and all the other extracurriculars that these kids are involved in was a challenge.
So kudos to Davenport Central.
You did a really nice job.
-♪ Two or three ♪ ♪ I'm on the job, you big nabob ♪ ♪ You ain't never had a friend, never had a friend ♪ ♪ You never had a friend, never had a friend ♪ -ISDTA values the work our dance athletes accomplish off the floor and have been recognizing and rewarding these outstanding efforts for many years.
Here are the recipients from this year.
-♪ Hey, hey, hey, hey ♪ ♪ You ain't never had a friend like me ♪ -The Sportsmanship Awards were given to West Central Valley, South Hamilton, and Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln.
This year's Top Academic Teams were Beckman Catholic, Iowa City Liberty, Kingsley-Pierson, Cedar Falls, Nevada, Central Decatur, Holy Trinity Catholic, East Sac County, and Bishop Garrigan.
Our senior scholarship recipients were Sky Mottet from Southeast Polk, Meridan Boyd from ADM, Emily Mercer from Newell-Fonda, Lillee Deike from Bishop Garrigan, Sophie Long from Marquette Catholic, Avery Steenblock from Newman Catholic, and Bailey Knouse from Pella.
The Be Authentic Awards went to Des Moines Roosevelt, West Fork, and Xavier.
The Be You Awards went to Manson Northwest Webster and Pella.
The Be Bold Awards went to Iowa Falls-Alden, Mason City, Springville, and Western Dubuque.
We now move into the Color Guard category with our Class I champion, IKM-Manning.
Second place was Pleasantville.
Third place was Garner-Hayfield/Ventura.
Aplington-Parkersburg came in fourth, and Louisa-Muscatine placed fifth.
I am Scott Enyart, along with Andrea Dana and Lois Turnage, bringing you highlights of the 2022 Iowa State Dance Team Championships.

-Our Color Guard category here really changes the look.
On the floor is what is called a floor covering, which is actually a large vinyl piece of fabric that transforms the floor into a stage.
IKM-Manning has a huge storytelling element going on here.
Introducing equipment, costuming, positioning on the floor, and obviously flag technique.
-Very strong movements, very precise and accurate with their equipment.
♪♪ -Timing with the equipment, of course, is imperative because it is very obvious if it's not together, but IKM is releasing these tosses.
Nicely done.
♪♪ -♪ No more, no more, no more ♪ -Creston earned first place in Class II Color Guard.
Roland-Story placed second.

-That underlying tempo and beat when the music disappears, it has to stay in their minds so their timing is still accurate, and Creston did a beautiful job with making that happen.

And now they're incorporating their rifles, which is difficult.
-Particularly the moving target and accuracy in the catches.

♪♪ And just as we do for our dance classes and color-guard categories, we do determine the class sizes by the school enrollment and not by the team size.

-And, of course, these color guards are coming off of busy fall marching seasons, but this indoor venue allows them to showcase their individual color-guard talents.

♪♪ ♪♪ This year, the ISDTA offered opportunities for dancers with disabilities to showcase their talent in a brand-new solo category called Beyond Limits.
Meet some of the dancers and enjoy performance highlights from all the 2022 participants.

And with me, I have Rachel Cogil and her mother, Roxanne Cogil.
We were a part of the first- ever Beyond Limits competition, and, Rachel, how did that feel?
-It was my first year, and I was a little nervous.
But I think I did pretty good.
-You did very well.
The biggest challenge was finding dance shoes that would fit.
[ Laughter ] -Two different sizes of shoes.
-If you were gonna give advice to any dancer out there, what would you tell them?
-Keep going.
Try your best and never give up.

-♪ When your dreams all fail ♪ ♪ And the ones we hail ♪ -Geo is a sophomore at Creston High School and has never taken a dance class.
He started with dance this year when friends encouraged him to try out for color guard.
He made the team as an alternate.
During the day, Geo took every opportunity to practice his Beyond Limits routine with his coach, Lisa Peters, and also got help from his color guard friends.
He continued practicing every night in his backyard, using the yard lights when it got too dark.
-♪ When you feel my heat ♪ ♪ Look into my eyes ♪ -Geo's dedication was rewarded with a medal, and following his performance, he hugged his coach, exclaiming, "I did it!
I didn't think I would get a place, but I did it."

I'd say about four years.

The Class III Dance champion was Claire Boyle from Iowa City, Regina.
MaKayla Beisel from Clarion-Goldfield-Dows was the champion in Class IV Dance.
Kelsey Adams from Monticello was crowned the champion in Class V Dance.
In Class VI Dance, our champion was Mia DeVries from Clear Lake.
The Class VII Dance champion from Sergeant Bluff-Luton was Bailey Ogden.
Alyssa Ramler from Xavier was crowned the champion in Class VIII Dance.
The Class IX champion was Sydnie Offermann from Western Dubuque.
The Class X Dance champion from Dowling Catholic was Jolissa Thomas.
Jordan Dawson from Waukee Northwest was crowned the champion in Class XI Dance.
And our Class XII Dance champion was Kennedy Kluver from West Des Moines Valley.
Our Class 1 Color Guard champion was Ashley Hutmacher from Louisa-Muscatine.
Saige Johnston from Creston was crowned the champion in Class II Color Guard.
And our Class III Color Guard champion was Bailey Simon from Dubuque Senior.
The Character Counts Team of the Year was Xavier High School, coached by Jess Novotny.
The Character Counts Coach of the Year was Kevin Masemann from Roland-Story.
The ISDTA Lifetime Achievement Award went to Marianne Peterson from Southeast Polk.
The ISDTA Friend of Drill Team recipients were Connie Diekema, Kim Jenkins, Julie Slater, and Cindy Wilson.

-This year we had 22 colleges competing in the Division I, II, and III NAIA and Community College divisions.
And our colleges can compete and enter into three categories -- Pop, Hip Hop, and Jazz.
And right here we're getting to see the wonderful performance of Iowa Central Community College in their Jazz.

West Fork is really making everything very in sync and unison.

They're really getting low and showing us a lot of strength and lower body control here.

-A lot of our dance teams have varying lengths of seasons, and our competition is in December.
Following that, there's a lot of teams that take their proud routines and show them off to their home crowds at basketball games.
There are some teams that then go on to compete at regional and national level competitions, which are in January and February and sometimes in March.
And then they wrap up their seasons with shows with their home crowds.
